Collection Rationale and Policy

“Games create a compelling need to know, a need to ask, examine, assimilate and master certain skills and content areas. Some experts argue that games are, first and foremost, learning systems, and that this accounts for the sense of engagement and entertainment players experience.” – Institute of Play

Video games are now a large part of our culture, with entire careers invested in their creation and management. They have the ability to instruct and inspire as well as entertain. To engage our students, create a sense of community, and provide current resources to meet recreational and learning needs, the library now provides in house gaming systems as well as circulating gaming equipment.

Additions to this collection will take into account the needs of the student body, preservation of games and digital artifacts related to games, Goshen College curriculum, and intellectual freedom. Librarians will continuously evaluate the collection for appropriate and engaging materials.
