The fundamentals of using the resources of the Good Library

About WorldCat Discovery

WorldCat Discovery logoWorldCat Discovery is the catalog / online search of the Good Library print book and ebook collection. Along with GC's book collection, it shows book holdings of libraries across the world, most of them available for free delivery through interlibrary loan. Discovery's results also include many academic articles, although going directly to EBSCO, JSTOR, or other collections often provide the best results.

WorldCat Discovery includes:

  • Good Library print books
  • Good Library ebooks
  • Books available to borrow from other libraries
  • Other physical items available at the library (movies, board games, etc.)

After finding background information searching for books in WorldCat Discovery is often the next step for a college level research project. Academic articles may be written with too narrow of a focus for your research, and a chapter of a academic book (or the entire book) is often exactly what you need.

Searching WorldCat Discovery

When searching in WorldCat Discovery it is best to search four to six words / terms at a time. Instead of searching

polar bears

or

What are effective habitat efforts to protect polar bears?

instead simply search

habitat conservation for polar bears

Within many full length books on polar bears will also be chapters devoted specifically to the habitat conservation efforts for polar bears.
